In the Nursery Phonics teaching will begin by focussing on Phase 1.

In Phase 1 phonics, children are taught about:

  • Environmental sounds
  • Instrumental sounds
  • Body percussion (e.g. clapping and stamping)
  • Rhythm and rhyme
  • Alliteration
  • Voice sounds
  • Oral blending and segmenting

Typical activities for teaching Phase 1 phonics include 'listening' walks, playing and identifying instruments, action songs, learning rhymes and playing games like I Spy.

This phase is intended to develop children’s listening, vocabulary and speaking skills.

In the Summer Term there will be continued revision of Phase 1, children in the Nursery will also be introduced to Phase 2 in preparation for Reception.

During this time they will cover in Phase 2, with a focus on learning the 19 most common single letter sounds by recognising them as the initial sounds in words they hear, read and write.
