Phonics

Delivery of Phonics at Chatsworth Primary School

We follow a Systematic Synthetic Phonics approach.

Nursery

  • Children in Nursery are taught sounds from phase one throughout the year. 
  • Sounds in Phase Two are introduced later in the year.
  • Children are taught one sound per week, through practical daily teaching sessions.

Reception

  • Children will revise Phase One and continue with Phase Two. 
  • Children will learn 4 sounds per week in Phase Two.
  • Phase Three will begin later in the year and cover 2/3 sounds a week.
  •  Children who are using Phase Three independently in their reading and writing will move to Phase Four.

Year 1

  • Children are split by into differentiated groups and are taught Phase Three, Four and Five as appropriate.
  • They learn on average, 2 sounds a week.
  • Phonics is taught daily including spellings on a Friday. Spellings are set according to phonics group.
  • Children who require additional support are invited to attend phonics sessions before school.

Year 2

  • Children are split by into differentiated groups and are taught Phase Four and Five as appropriate.
  • As Phase 6 is completed, the phonics daily phonics session will focus on spelling and grammar necessary for National Curriculum expectations
  • Phonics is taught daily including spellings on a Friday. Spellings are set according to phonics group.
  • Before school booster sessions run 3 times a week to support children who need to sit or resit Phonics Screening.
