Overview

At Chatsworth Primary School we want our children to develop a lifelong love of learning and curiosity in the world around them. Our curriculum is ambitious, engaging and inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all our learners so that when children leave us at the end of Year Six, they are confident and ready to take the next steps into their education, regardless of their starting point.

We firmly believe in the importance of helping our pupils develop as a whole person and our values of honesty, respect, responsibility, perseverance, compassion, enjoyment and community underpin everything we do.

We have developed our curriculum based on the National Curriculum 2014.  The content in our curriculum has been selected to ensure that it is relevant to our diverse community and it is sequenced in a meaningful way that enables children to make connections and progress from unit to unit, term to term and year to year.

Our curriculum is balanced, with priority given to teaching the fundamentals of reading, writing and maths every day to ensure that all pupils acquire the basic skills for learning and life, and these skills are used and practiced across other subjects.

It is important to us to provide a broad range of exciting, relevant and creative opportunities that enrich the children's learning. We include a range of on and off site experiences within our curriculum, including visits to our local area, alongside trips to places within London and further afield.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Ensure all pupils have high aspirations.

  • Ensure pupils have a secure understanding of the world around them and the people within it.

  • Ensure pupils have a good understanding of how to keep their body and mind healthy.

  • Develop strong characters who are resilient and adaptable.

  • Develop individuals who are able to think creatively and imaginatively to solve problems.

  • Develop pupils with good listening skills, who can collaborate and co-operate as well as lead teams.

  • Develop pupils who can think critically to develop and articulate their own opinions based on the facts presented to them.

  • Develop pupils who have a strong set of core values and a good understanding of fundamental British values.

Our long term curriculum plans show how we intend to cover the fundamental concepts of each national curriculum subject.  Each subject has a skills overview to show how the skills for each subject develop and build as children move through the school.

Within our curriculum, we specify exactly what we teach in each subject and communicate this with our staff, parent and governors. Our intended curriculum is set out through key documents. Each document covers EYFS to Year 6:

  • A long term, whole school overview from each subject showing how the content in the National Curriculum and EYFS framework is covered

  • A skills overview for each subject, setting out how subject specific skills build year on year

  • A medium term plan, setting out the sequence of learning for each unit
